Cumberland, Wis., September 28th--

Miss Elva Aney, charged with the murder of Albert Hewitt, was acquitted by the jury... .

On the night of June 13th, Albert asked Elva to secretly visit his home; she refused, said she would have nothing more to do with him and that she was engaged to another man.  When Albert abused her and chased her around, she threatened to shoot him. Elva ran back into the house, procured a shotgun as Albert continued up the stairway after her.  As he ignored her command to stop, she fired at his knee, which severed an artery, causing his death a few minutes later.

Elva Aney is a pretty 21 year old. She was orphaned at an early age and had to shift for herself.  She was staying with her grandmother on a farm near Chetek when the shooting occurred.

Public sentiment was strongly in favor of the girl, it being the popular belief that the shooting was justifiable.

Elva married William Edward Richmond on April 16, 1907, in Chetek, Barron, Wisconsin.  William was the son of Emory and Lodema Richmond.

A Richmond descendant, Michel Boisvert, is searching for more information about his "lost" James Richmond.

His most recent e-mail:

I'd like to ask everyone to bring to my attention any lost James Richmond or absent from United States between 1802-1810.  I am a descendant of a James Richmond who got married in Trois-Rivières  (Quebec) in 1802. His parents are not identified in the marriage record.  By Y-DNA testing, I am related somehow to Richmond of Taunton, MA.

Per another e-mail:  

I have worked on a James Richmond living at Baie-du-Febvre, Quebec, between 1802-1810.   We don't know where he came from, or what happened to him after 1810.  I believe it is James 932 of Joshua book, but I have no proof.    A descendant has been Y-DNA tested and was found  as a relative of John Richmond 1594-1664.

From the Richmond family book:

932. James Richmond 6 (James 5, Sylvester 4, Ebenezer 3, John 2, John 1).  James married in Canada.  Nothing has been heard of him since the War of 1812, and nothing is known of his descendants.

There may be a connection to LaCrosse County, Wisconsin.

Update from Michel's newest e-mail:

...important details...he was between 1762 and 1784. I cannot tell if, in 1810 after the death of his wife,  he also died in Quebec or if gave his 2 kids in adoption and took off.

I already looked to Joshua Bailey's book and I have 2-3 possibilities. Maybe the one I am looking for is not in the book.

I received an e-mail asking if I could help with her Richmond ancestors.  Because the person who sent the e-mail already had the information from the J.B. Richmond book, I needed to go beyond that source if I could be of any assistance.  Below are excerpts from her e-mail:

...Ann Richmond of Muskego, Waukesha, Wi....daughter of Eleanah Elkananh (Gideon, Nathaniel, Edward. John, John).  Her lineage was through Ann's daughter, Samantha Welch... .

The Ancestors of FORREST EARL LADD family tree included Ann, so I used that site as an online template. 

     20. ELKANAH [6] RICHMOND, born Jan. 7, 1771 in Middleboro; died July 1852 in Madison, OH.
viii. ANN [7] RICHMOND, born March 16, 1806 in Washington, MA; married JOHN WALSH.

The Ann Wildern Martin Family site at Rootsweb was very helpful, especially the post-em note attached to Ann Richmond's entry.  The attached note stated that:

"Ann Richmond married John Welch... . They settled in Muskego, Waukesha, WI. Their experience is recounted in the 1880 History of Waukesha County at p. 910. Anne died in Muskego 6 Oct 1890 as recounted in Haight, Theron W. "Memoirs of Waukesha County, WI", pp 680-681 (Madison, 1907)."

From Henry Richmond Welch's biography, the family lived in Dexter (Washtenaw Co.), Michigan, when he was born.  John Welch, his father, died in 1872 and Ann (Richmond) Welch died on October 6, 1890.

Garvitt Not Garrett

Sarah Weatherwax was identified as a niece in James Richmond's will.... . Whose daughter was she? Was Weatherwax her maiden or married name? Was Sarah James' niece through his wife's side of the family? 

A comment posted on the blog stated:

Harriet Richmond was James Richmond's sister.  In transcribing James Richmond's will, I interpreted Harriet's married name as GARRETT, not GARVITT.  From the will:  Also a set of good, substantial grave stones for my deceased sister Mrs. Harriet Garrett, which also are to be placed at her grave.

Harriet Garrett is also how I transcribed her name in her father's will.

Now the information in the1850 census fell into place (Ira P. Richmond was James' brother, a fact known to me for some time).  Why didn't it click with me earlier?

ELIJAH RICHMOND, WALWORTH COUNTY, WISCONSIN To the Judge of said court: The petition of Ira P. Richmond of the town of Bloomfield in said county respectfully represents that Elijah Richmond late of said town deceased on the 21st day of May 1859 at his residence in said town died testate as petitioner believes: that the instrument in writing herewith presented to this court is the last will and testament of said deceased as petitioner believes: that Timothy H. Fellows of said town who is named and appointed in the said will & testament sole executor thereof refuses to take upon him the duties of said trust--; that the heirs at law of said deceased are all named in said will as petitioner believes Your petitioner would further represent that he is a son of said deceased & one of the devisees named in said instrument & being desirous that the execution of said will be duly proved & that said will an instrument be lawfully established as the last will & testament of said deceased would pray that a day be appointed for bearing the proofs of said last will & testament & that public notice thereof be given to all persons interested. Day of October AD 1860 by posting notices thereof in four public places in said county and by publishing the same notice in the Geneva Lake Mirror, a weekly newspaper printed & published in the Village of Geneva I the county of Walworth State of Wisconsin for four weeks successively previous to the time fixed for our first meeting, a copy of which notice so posted & published is hereunto annexed. And that in issuance of such notice we attended at the times & places therein specified for the purposes of aforesaid and we do further report that the following is a full and correct list of all the claims presented to us for allowance against the said Elijah Richmond deceased of the amounts allowed and disallowed on each claim of the amounts exhibited in offset in each case and the amounts allowed and disallowed in offset to each claim and the final Balance in each case in favor of or against the estate of the said Elijah Richmond deceased. Statement of claims against said estate presented, acted upon and balances struck & allowed by us, to wit: E.D. Richardson as Agent for Messers Wood and Mount _(?) presented a judgment a transcript of which is hereunto annexed filed and marked "A." The amount of damages, costs & interest up to June 30th, 1860 is $101.17, which amount was allowed by us as against the said estate. $101.17 Newman Mc Acker presented a claim against said estate it being a balance of account over and above all offsets claimed by said estate which balance was duly sworn to by said Mc Acker, and admitted by the administrator & heirs of said estate which claim & stipulation is hereunto annexed filed & marked "B," said balance as being $50.00 & allowed by us as a claim against said estate. $50.00 Peter Wheeler presented a claim against said estate which claim is hereunto annexed filed and marked "C." To the amount of 7.15 to which claim an offset was claimed to the amount of 7.15 for horse hire. Witnesses being called sworn and testified from the testimony annexed we the said commissioners did adjudge & determine that said claim was fully satisfied & paid in by said offset James A. Richmond presented a claim which is hereunto annexed and filed & marked "D." After hearing all the proofs & testimony introduced in the matter we did adjudge & determine that the first charge for labor & for 7 months to be worth six dollars per month. See Bill of account as hereto annexed marked as to the amounts allowed. The balance of said account as allowed by us and due from said estate to said Jas. A. Richmond after deducting offsets & deductions from the price of labor as charge according to proofs to be 111.08 All of Which is respectfully submitted Given under our hands this 19th day of October AD 1860 J.T. Newman M. & Samantha Jane (Richmond) Acker

NEWMAN N. ACKER follows farming on section 27, Bloomfield Township. Here he owns and operates one hundred and ninety-seven acres of good land, and has made his home thereon for thirty-eight years. His farm is one of the best in the neighborhood, being under a high state of cultivation, and well improved with all modern accessories and conveniences. Neat and thrifty in appearance, it indicates to the passer-by the careful supervision of the owner, who is regarded as one of the leading agriculturists of the community.

Mr. Acker was born in Livingston County, N. Y., February 9, 1824. His grandfather, Albert Acker, was a native of England, and with a brother, John, crossed the briny deep to the New World, locating in New Jersey, whence he afterwards removed to New York. His brother located in Schoharie County of the Empire State. Albert Acker was a shoemaker by trade, and also followed the occupation of farming. During the Revolutionary War, he aided the Colonies in their struggle for independence, and later drew a pension in recognition of his services. His death occurred at about the age of eighty years. In his family of eight children was Silas Acker, the father of our subject, who was born in New Jersey, but during the greater part of his life carried on agricultural pursuits in Livingston County, N. Y., where his death occurred in 1868, at the age of seventy-eight. He served in the War of 1812. The mother of our subject bore the maiden name of Betsy McClelland. Her father, Joseph McClelland, was a native of Ireland, and became a farmer of Livingston County, N. Y.

The parents of our subject had a family of six children, three of whom are yet living: Sallie Ann, wife of Alanson E. Warner of Iola, Kan.; Newman M.; and Samuel. Mr. and Mrs. Acker were both members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. After the death of his first wife, the father married Betsy John, and to them were born two children, Elizabeth and Frances. For his third wife, Mr. Acker chose Miss Phoebe Kerns, and their union was blessed with two children, Frank and Rosina Sidona.

The gentleman whose name heads this record remained on a farm in Livingston County, N. Y., until fifteen years of age, and then went to Avon, where he learned the blacksmith's trade, which he followed for about four years. On the expiration of that period, he once more turned his attention to agricultural pursuits. As a companion and helpmate on life's journey, he chose Miss Samantha Jane Richmond, and on the 19th of March, 1846, their marriage was celebrated. The lady is a daughter of Elisha [sic] and Elizabeth (Fowler) Richmond, natives of New York.

In 1849, Mr. and Mrs. Acker emigrated westward, locating in Wisconsin, where our subject purchased a farm of eighty acres, to which he afterward added forty-two acres. In 1851 he removed his family to that place, and there resided for five years, when they moved to their present home. Besides this farm, Mr. Acker owns one hundred and four acres elsewhere, and has become one of the substantial citizens of the community. Seven children were born of the union of our subject and his wife, two sons and five daughters. Wilbur Hoag married Agnes Ketchpaw, by whom he has two children, Lucina Jane and George Newman, and now makes his home in Elkhorn. Marvin Whitfield wedded Elizabeth Jane Gifford, who died leaving four children: Luella, Georgie Ann, Maude and Lucy Mary. Loretta is the wife of Edwin Davis, of Bloomfield Township, by whom she has three sons: Newman, Claude and Marvin. Frances Jane is now deceased. Dollie Jane is the wife of Oscar Van Dyke, of Boone County, Ill., by whom she has a daughter, Alta May. Della Retta is the wife of Myron Lambert. They live on the old homestead, and have two children, Jennie Diantha and Pearl. Mary Elizabeth, the youngest of the family, is now deceased.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Acker are faithful and consistent members of the Methodist Church, in which he is now serving as Steward. The cause of temperance finds in him a warm friend, and he is much interested in the growth of temperance principles. In politics, he is a supporter of the Republican party. He has witnessed the greater part of the development of Walworth County, has seen its wild land transformed into beautiful homes and farms, and has watched the growth of the towns and cities. In the work of public improvement and advancement he has ever borne his part, and well deserves mention among the early settlers.

Huldah was 28 years old and living with her parents, Elijah & Elizabeth (Fowler) Richmond in Conesus, Livingston Co., New York, in 1850.

From the Will of Elijah Richmond:
I give to my daughter Holda Richmond the land and appurtenances situated thereon known and described as the Patterson Chapin Farm lying and being in the town of Bloomfield Walworth County and State of Wisconsin together with all the household furniture now possessed by me.

The farm known as the Patterson Chapin farm being the south half of the north west quarter twenty four acres off of the North part of the west half of the south west quarter of Section (22) twenty two of the town of Bloomfield containing (104) one hundred and four acres.

Huldah Sherman was living with her sister and brother-in-law (Samantha & Newman Acker) in Walworth Co., Wisconsin in 1860. Per that census, Huldah was married within the last year (1859). John Sherman who was married within the last year was enumerated here in 1860 (Deodat Brewster (see picture here) and family were in the same household as John Sherman). Don't know the significance, if any, of the Brewsters living with John Sherman and his wife, Huldah, not living with him in 1860.

John Sherman may have married 2nd Ella Frances Richards, born in June of 1839 in Ohio. John died in 1899.

The photo of the gravestone was one of many sent to me by Lynn, who is a Clary descendant (Lucy Clary married Ira Richmond and lived in Walworth Co., WI).

5220 NORMAN C. RICHMOND (8)* (Peleg S. 7, Stephen 6, Edward 5, Benjamin 4, Edward 3, Edward 2, John 1) was born in Hillsdale, N. Y., March 4, 1827. He married January 30, 1851, Elizabeth Yates, daughter of Rev. Edwin [& Elizabeth] Atkinson, Liverpool, Eng. She was born April 30, 1830. He removed, with his father, from Hillsdale to South Lee in 1833, and April 8, 1848, emigrated to Grand Chute Falls, Appleton, Wis., where he is a paper manufacturer.

The Edwin & Elizabeth Atkinson family was in Dodge Co., Wisconsin, in 1850.

Claude M. Atkinson was born at Appleton, Wisconsin, November 4,
1862, son of James Fremont and Anna Frances (Waterbury) Atkinson.
His grandfather, Rev. Edwin Atkinson, was an old-time Methodist circuit
rider. He was born in England, was ordained a minister of the Metho-
dist church in that country and after his marriage came to Canada in
1836, and when Wisconsin was still a territory and the domain of the
wild Indian he moved there and for a time lived in Dodge County and
later in Outagamie County.

Elizabeth Yates Atkinson Richmond was an author who wrote "Poems of the Western Land," in 1878.

A letter from Elizabeth to her mother regarding childbirth in the Wisconsin frontier in 1851 was quoted in "Brought to bed: childbearing..." here.
