Phebe (Richmond) Thorne

946.  ICHABOD RICHMOND married Pamelia Bettes of Brighton, Canada West, who was born about 1782.  They had fourteen children, who also had large families.  They resided in Brighton.

CHILD:

2520.  Phebe (7), born about 1816; married Jonah Thorne.  Resided in Ashtabula, Ohio.

The Jonah (1813 - 1899) and Phebe (1816-1863) Thorne family moved to Lowell, Lake Co., Indiana.  The Lowell Public Library has a biographical page for this family.

Jonah Thorne's obituary stated that he had 3 children (one died in infancy) and that two daughters survived him (Mrs. P.D. Clark and Mrs. J.A. Ault both of Lowell).

Also mentioned in the Lowell Public Library page article:
Jonah's brother, Franklin, settled in Chicago where he built an iron foundry called the Franklin Iron Works. It is now the Wisconsin Steel Mills and a subsidiary of U.S. Steel.  One living granddaughter of Jonah Thorne, a daughter of the Perry Clarks, is Mrs. Etta Vories, age 79, of Port Huron, Mich. She will be in Lowell for centennial festivities.  Other descendants, many living in Lowell, are Walter James, Getti Powell, Mrs.Agnes Machacek, Mrs. Iva Nichols, Mrs. Alice Ruley, Myrtle Johnson, Thorne Clark, Millard, Virginia and Margaret Clark.

Phebe (Richmond) Thorne was living in Lowell, Lake Co., Indiana, in 1860, with her husband Jonah and others. Her 18 year old daughter, Sarah Jane, was living with her husband, Perry D. Clark, also in Lake County, Indiana.  Daughter (Lauretta) Abigail and her husband, John Ault were living in Allen Co., Kansas, in 1860.

Don't Know Much About Ira Pratt Richmond

If Lorenza (or Losenza) Backus married a James Richmond (per Megow genealogical records by Nettie Adell Woodworth) it makes sense that Lorenza, sister of my Laura Backus married James, brother of Laura's husband Thomas Richmond. So that's the theory I'm going with unless and until I find one better.

James Richmond's will (probated aft. 15 December 1874) named Ira Pratt Richmond as his son. The Megow records stated that Jim and Losenza (Backus) Richmond had two sons, Ira Pratt Richmond, who supposedly died in the Civil War and Asberry Richmond who died at the age of 3 or 4. If my theory is correct and Thomas Richmond's brother James was married to Losenza then Ira Pratt Richmond was still living when James' will was made.

Was Ira hiding in plain sight in the 1850 NY census? Ira Richmond, age 13, was enumerated with Elijah & Elizabeth Richmond, who were James' parents. However Ira was listed next to Silas in the census and James was not with the family group, so the assumption on my part several years ago was that Silas was Ira's father. Now it seems more likely that Ira was James' son.

Where was James Richmond in 1850? As I mentioned in this post, there was a James Richmond in Auburn Prison (NY) in 1850. Was it this James?

In the 1860 WI Census taken in Walworth County, James A. Richmond was enumerated with his brother, Ira and Ira's wife Lucy.

1875 WI State Census, Walworth Co.
Head of Family Male/Female
Richmond, Pratt 3/2 [James' son?]
Richmond, Ira P. 4/2 [James' brother?]

I.P. Richmond in the 1885 WI State Census Genova Junction
5 males / 6 females
[Probably the Ira Pratt Richmond who was James' brother]

The 1900 MI Census lists a Pratt Richmond, b. ca 1833, in New York, as a patient in the Northern Michigan Asylum in Grand Traverse Co., Michigan. He died on December 19, 1901. Was this person the son of James & Lorenza? The death record certificate does not record any parents' names. Perhaps more can be discovered at the Archives of Michigan.

Left My Bed And Board In 1831 (But Came Back)

Sure wish I knew the story behind this announcement:

Thomas & Laura (Backus) Richmond were my ancestors. Their daughter, Cynthia (Richmond) More, born 29 December 1829, in Conesus, Livingston Co., New York, was not even 2 years old when her parents separated. Thomas and Laura reconciled and had Almina in 1837 and Emory in 1838 who lived to adulthood. The Richmond family moved to Lapeer County, Michigan, some time after the 1850 census was taken.

My Mayflower / Richmond Connection

The most excellent Richmond Family website [here] has a Mayflower link based upon the marriage of Col. Silvester Richmond to Elizabeth Rogers. I would like to add my own Mayflower connection based upon the marriage of Thomas Richmond to Laura Backus. Laura's lineage goes back to Stephen Hopkins and also his daughter Constance Hopkins. An added bonus; descendants of Stephen Hopkins are also eligible for the Jamestowne Society [see Qualifying Ancestors here].
