Ebenezer Richmond of Allegany Co., New York

Ebenezer Richmond, son of Edward (6), in the J. B. Richmond book, and a close relative of my Elijah Richmond:

#2457. EBENEZER RICHMOND (7) (Edward 6, Edward 5, Benjamin 4, Edward 3, Edward 2, John 1) was born in Austerlitz, N. Y., February 12, 1793. He married, December 26, 1816, Louisa Gott. He was Deacon of the Universalist Church in Independence. All the children resided in Waterville, N. Y., in 1859.

He was a farmer and merchant, and resided in Whitesville, N. Y. No children (1859).
5286. Henry (8), born June 14, 1833; married Selina Ketchum.
5287. John Murray (8), born Feb. 10, 1836; married Julia Ann Richmond (See No. 5276).
5288. George Washington (8), born Nov. 21, 1838; unmarried in 1859. He was a
volunteer in the Army of the Potomac, and was detached to serve in the Balloon Corps.

According to this website, Ebenezer Richmond was a veteran of the War of 1812, and "Murray J. Richmond, killed before Petersburg, Va., 17 July 1864."


From History of Allegany Co., New York, Town of Independence:
"Others who came during the year (1823) were Ebenezer Richmond, David S. Briggs, Alvah Wood, Conrad Minges, Daniel Dexter, John Wheeler and Simeon Wilcox. Richmond, a native of Oneida county, moved in during the month of January, from Steuben county, bringing in several cattle and sheep. He had come the previous fall and located land and built a house. Richmond and Briggs are both dead. The latter died in September, 1861." [Note: Louisa Richmond was a widow by 1870]

A 1925 newspaper article said that Mrs. Harvey Richmond of Whitesville, suffered a broken ankle. The newspapers are online at the Andover (NY) Free Library; Andover is in Allegany Co., New York. Even if the article does not pertain to the Mrs. Harvey Richmond of the generation listed above, I've now found a new source to explore. Harvey Story Richmond was a widower in 1900, so it wasn't his wife in the article.

Finding Richmonds at the DAR Online

A search found ancestor Edward Richmond, #A096057, who was submitted to the DAR by Irene Richmond McLaughlin #161390.

The Paule Question

After Jessica of Jessica's Genejournal posed a question about becoming a certified genealogist and referred to the Board for Certification of Genealogists site here, I explored the BCG website and found the following article here:

Saxbe, William B., Jr., CG, FASG. "Who Was the Mother of James² Paule (1657-1724) of Taunton, Massachusetts?" The American Genealogist 73 (October 1998): 312-315.

Because of the early time frame in Taunton, Massachusetts, I thought that the James Paule question may involve Mary Richmond (sister of my presumed ancestor, Edward Richmond) who married a Paul(e).

I checked my copy of the J.B. Richmond book for Mary Richmond and found her listed in a family group with her father John, the emigrant:

And then found Mary (#5, b. ca 1639) married to William Paul in the image below:

Not only did the American Genealogist article provide an example of a professional genealogist's work, it added insight to the Richmond family to whom this blog is dedicated.

One Marriage - Two Sides of The Family Tree

Jennie Howland's uncle, Ephraim Howland, lived in Lapeer Co., MI. Jennie married into my paternal grandfather's sister's family, and her "Richmond" roots are delineated in a separate post. She and her uncle Ephraim share the same Richmond ancestry.

While looking at Michigan birth, marriage and death records recently uploaded at the family search site , I found that Ephraim and Harriet (Bachman) Howland's granddaughter, Harriet Howland, married William Allen MacDonald of Roscommon County, Michigan, in 1925. While examining the online marriage record of Harriet and William, I realized that William Allen MacDonald was already in my FamilyTreeMaker family tree database. Mr. MacDonald's aunt, Harriet MacDonald, was the first wife of Albert Edward Cameron. A. Edward Cameron was my paternal grandmother's uncle. Harriet (MacDonald) Cameron and infant daughter, Lillie Cameron, both died in 1892, in Roscommon Co., MI.

Massachusetts SOS Search Engine

The Massachusetts Secretary of State has a search engine that should be helpful with tracking down Richmonds in Mass.

I tried "Cowdall" for Abigail Davis Richmond's step-father.
