Elva Aney Richmond

Elva Nancy Aney Richmond's profile at Wikitree.

She was involved in a traumatic incident as a young woman.  A newspaper headline:

The Minneapolis Journal (Minnesota) 28 Sep 1906 (Newspapers.com)

Cumberland, Wis., September 28th--

Miss Elva Aney, charged with the murder of Albert Hewitt, was acquitted by the jury... .

On the night of June 13th, Albert asked Elva to secretly visit his home; she refused, said she would have nothing more to do with him and that she was engaged to another man.  When Albert abused her and chased her around, she threatened to shoot him. Elva ran back into the house, procured a shotgun as Albert continued up the stairway after her.  As he ignored her command to stop, she fired at his knee, which severed an artery, causing his death a few minutes later.

Elva Aney is a pretty 21 year old. She was orphaned at an early age and had to shift for herself.  She was staying with her grandmother on a farm near Chetek when the shooting occurred.

Public sentiment was strongly in favor of the girl, it being the popular belief that the shooting was justifiable.

Elva married William Edward Richmond on April 16, 1907, in Chetek, Barron, Wisconsin.  William was the son of Emory and Lodema Richmond.

Byron Levi Richmond's Wife, Daisy Hemingway

The Oakland Township Patch published an article about the local Hemingway family and their relationship to Ernest Hemingway.  My notes indicated that there is a picture of *Byron Richmond who married Daisy Hemingway (daughter of Ernest Needham Hemingway) included in the article.  There is a wedding picture (Byron and Daisy?) as well as three other photographs included in the article.

"As my research suggests, both Ernest and Needham are descended from Ralph Hemenway who was born in England in 1603. Among Ralph's children were two sons, both of whom were born in Massachusetts; Samuel in 1636 and Joshua in 1643. Ernest Hemingway is a descendant of Samuel, while Needham is descended from Joshua."
"Originally from Canandaigua, New York, Hemingway was born in 1793 and traveled to Michigan in the early 1820s when Michigan was still a territory."

Lots of drama in the life of Canby Bell, Georgia (Bell) Richmond's brother.

Morris Richmond In The Ann Arbor Area

The Ann Arbor Argus, May 15, 1896, online at the Old Newspapers website, featured a "Card Of Thanks" from the relatives of Morris Richmond (Andrew Richmond and sisters).

The obituary (as well as the same card of thanks) was published the same date (May 15, 1896) in the Ann Arbor Argus newspaper:

Ann Arbor Argus, May 15, 1896
Old News: Old News, Ann Arbor Argus
People: Morris Richmond

The obituary stated that Morris Richmond was buried in the Webster Cemetery.

From the Ann Arbor Observer Then And Now site:
A second Greek Revival in Scio Township was the home of farmer Morris Richmond*, who hailed from New York and built his house in 1847, taking more than two years to do it. The house was obviously built by someone who knew about architecture, since it features classic Greek Revival attributes: gable entrance, symmetrical windows, and even a raised area under the beams forming a frieze.  *Could have been the father of Morris Richmond (also named Morris) who died in 1896

Morris Winans Richmond was the son of Morris and Louisa Winans Richmond and the grandson of Sylvester and Harriet (Covill) Richmond.  Sylvester Richmond's lineage back to John, the original immigrant, is: Sylvester Richmond 6 (Edward 5, Benjamin 4, Edward 3, Edward 2, John 1).  Sylvester was closely related to my Richmond line.

Our James Levi More?

James Levi More was the son of James & Cynthia (Richmond) More. Cynthia was #7426 in the J.B. Richmond book.

From the Lapeer County Democrat newspaper:

Wednesday, January 8, 1896:
J. L. Moore*, formerly of this county but lately of Owosso, was here last week. He has bought a grocery business at Lansing where he will reside.J. L. More, "formerly of this county (Lapeer)...". James Levi More was born (in 1856) and raised in Lapeer County, Michigan.

Another likely move for him, also from the Lapeer County Democrat, was noted on March 23, 1892: Thornville - Levi Moore will rent his farm to William Blow for a year and move to Ortonville (Oakland Co, MI). Shall be sorry to lose them.

His (James Levi More's) obituary indicated that he had been in the grocery business, although in Genesee Co. rather than Lansing in Ingham Co., Michigan:

OBITUARY - Flint Journal, March 21, 1923
DATE OF DEATH: March 15, 1923
MORE - James L. More, formerly of Flint, died suddenly of apoplexy, at his home in Portland , Ore., on Thursday. He was a member of Flint Lodge, No. 174, F. & A. M., and had a large circle of friends here. He was formerly engaged in retail grocery business in the Alvord block . He leaves his wife in Portland and daughter, Mrs. Maud McLeod of San Francisco, Cal., also a sister, Mrs. William S. Powers of Flint.

For further research: Land records in Oakland, Shiawassee, Ingham and Genesee counties may be helpful in determining whether or not the subject of the January 8, 1896, Lapeer County Democrat newspaper excerpt was "our" J. L. More and tracking his many moves.

*More and Moore are used interchangeably for this family

Ebenezer Richmond, son of Edward (6), in the J. B. Richmond book, and a close relative of my Elijah Richmond:

5288. George Washington (8), born Nov. 21, 1838; unmarried in 1859. He was a
volunteer in the Army of the Potomac, and was detached to serve in the Balloon Corps.

According to this website, Ebenezer Richmond was a veteran of the War of 1812, and "Murray J. Richmond, killed before Petersburg, Va., 17 July 1864."

From History of Allegany Co., New York, Town of Independence:
"Others who came during the year (1823) were Ebenezer Richmond, David S. Briggs, Alvah Wood, Conrad Minges, Daniel Dexter, John Wheeler and Simeon Wilcox. Richmond, a native of Oneida county, moved in during the month of January, from Steuben county, bringing in several cattle and sheep. He had come the previous fall and located land and built a house. Richmond and Briggs are both dead. The latter died in September, 1861." [Note: Louisa Richmond was a widow by 1870]

In 1880, Mrs. Louisa Richmond was a widow and living with her son, Henry, in Independence, Allegany Co., New York:

A 1925 newspaper article said that Mrs. Harvey Richmond of Whitesville, suffered a broken ankle. The newspapers are online at the Andover (NY) Free Library; Andover is in Allegany Co., New York. Even if the article does not pertain to the Mrs. Harvey Richmond of the generation listed above, I've now found a new source to explore. Harvey Story Richmond was a widower in 1900, so it wasn't his wife in the article.
