Finding The Ancestors Of Charles F. Richmond

Usually a Richmond descendant is found in the J.B. Richmond book and then that person's family tree is used for blogs here (including my Cynthia Richmond). In this case I found Charles F. Richmond in a "Landon" family biography and wanted to place him, if possible, as a descendant of John Richmond, the original American immigrant.

Charles F. Richmond married Eliza Jane Chapel, daughter of Guerdon & Rachel (Landon) Chapel, a descendant of Nathaniel Landon. Nathaniel's brother James Landon was the ancestor of Ellis Landon. Ellis Landon married the widowed Eva (Whiteman) Smith, making Ellis my husband Jim's step-great-grandfather.

From Genealogies of New Jersey Families:

Rachel (Landon) Chapel, b. 1797, was the daughter of Nathaniel & Hannah (Greene) Landon. Nathaniel filed for a Revolutionary War pension while he was living in Oakland Co., Michigan, in 1828. Nathaniel & James were both sons of the person identified as William #6 & Mercy Landon in the NJ Families book.

James filed for a Revolutionary War pension from his home in Delaware Co., Ohio, in 1818. James & Elizabeth Landon's son, James married Elizabeth Kennedy. Darius Landon was the son of James & Elizabeth (Kennedy) Landon and the father of Ellis Landon.

It was noted that Charles F. Richmond had died in 1862 in Washington, D.C.; he was found in the 1850 & 1860 censuses in Kent Co., Michigan. In 1860 he was living near his mother-in-law, Rachel Chapel (they're on the same census page), but Charles is living with a Louisa J. Richmond who was born in Ireland.

Charles H. (sic) Richmond's name was found on a Civil War pension index card with a date of December 29, 1862 (he died Sept. 26, 1862) and Application #9351 (widow) and for the minor(s) #120610; the widow's certificate number was #4337 and the minor's certificate no. was 73087 (#73087 & #4337 matched another document for Charles F. Richmond). He was in Co. D, 8th Regiment of the Michigan Infantry.

A search here revealed the following information:

Charles F. RICHMOND (AFN: 165F-HKT)

Event(s) Birth: 10 Mar 1815
Parents Father: William RICHMOND (AFN: 1659-8HN)
Mother: Martha Varnum TURNER (AFN: 1659-8JV)

A search for William Richmond & Martha Varnum Turner showed William to be the son of Gilbert & Althea Gorham. I was then able to place Charles F. Richmond in the Joshua Bailey Richmond book.

William & Martha Varnum Turner's family as found in the J. B. Richmond book:

Gilbert & Althea Gorham's family
as found in the J. B. Richmond book:

So the question: Could Charles be found in the J. B. Richmond book? Yes, he could and yes he was. His Richmond lineage: Charles F. 8, William 7, Gilbert 6, Ichabod 5, William 4, Silvester 3, Edward 2, John 1). He was also a Mayflower descendant through Silvester (3) Richmond's wife.

Frederick Douglass Married A Richmond Descendant!

Frederick Douglass married a Richmond descendant, who was also a Mayflower descendant, named Helen Pitts!

This
website has the Mayflower lineage of Helen Pitt Douglass. Her Mayflower line goes through Sylvester Richmond who married Elizabeth, the daughter of Elizabeth Pabodie Rogers. Elizabeth Pabodie was the granddaughter of John Mullins and Priscilla Alden. Other descendants of Sylvester & Elizabeth (Rogers) Richmond included Massachusetts Senator Charles P. Sumner, Dr. Henry Barton Jacobs and Civil War General Lewis Richmond.

The lineage of Helen Pitts Douglass found in the Joshua Bailey Richmond book ends with her father, Gideon Pitt, the oldest child of Peter & Abigail (Richmond) Pitt: Gideon Pitt (6), Abigail Richmond (5), William (4), Silvester (3), Edward (2), John (1).

The Richmond book also skipped over Gideon Pitt & Jane Wells who were listed as Helen's grandparents in the above-referenced Mayflower ancestors website. However, Helen was living with Gideon (age 43) and Jane (age 37) in the 1850 NY census and the 1860 census and they must be her parents. Helen was still living with her parents (Gideon & Jane (Wells) Pitt) in 1870.

The Papers of Frederick Douglass found at the Library of Congress included papers belonging to Helen Pitt Douglass.

Frederick Douglass died in 1895; his widow was found here in the 1900 census. Helen Pitt Douglass died in 1903.

I share the earliest two Richmond ancestors (Edward (2) and John (1)) listed with Helen Pitt Douglass.
