Morris Richmond In The Ann Arbor Area

The Ann Arbor Argus, May 15, 1896, online at the Old Newspapers website, featured a "Card Of Thanks" from the relatives of Morris Richmond (Andrew Richmond and sisters).

The obituary (as well as the same card of thanks) was published the same date (May 15, 1896) in the Ann Arbor Argus newspaper:

Ann Arbor Argus, May 15, 1896
Old News: Old News, Ann Arbor Argus
People: Morris Richmond

The obituary stated that Morris Richmond was buried in the Webster Cemetery.

From the Ann Arbor Observer Then And Now site:
A second Greek Revival in Scio Township was the home of farmer Morris Richmond*, who hailed from New York and built his house in 1847, taking more than two years to do it. The house was obviously built by someone who knew about architecture, since it features classic Greek Revival attributes: gable entrance, symmetrical windows, and even a raised area under the beams forming a frieze.  *Could have been the father of Morris Richmond (also named Morris) who died in 1896

Morris Winans Richmond was the son of Morris and Louisa Winans Richmond and the grandson of Sylvester and Harriet (Covill) Richmond.  Sylvester Richmond's lineage back to John, the original immigrant, is: Sylvester Richmond 6 (Edward 5, Benjamin 4, Edward 3, Edward 2, John 1).  Sylvester was closely related to my Richmond line.

Ann (Richmond) Welch

I received an e-mail asking if I could help with her Richmond ancestors.  Because the person who sent the e-mail already had the information from the J.B. Richmond book, I needed to go beyond that source if I could be of any assistance.  Below are excerpts from her e-mail:

...Ann Richmond of Muskego, Waukesha, Wi....daughter of Eleanah Elkananh (Gideon, Nathaniel, Edward. John, John).  Her lineage was through Ann's daughter, Samantha Welch... .

The Ancestors of FORREST EARL LADD family tree included Ann, so I used that site as an online template.
     20. ELKANAH [6] RICHMOND, born Jan. 7, 1771 in Middleboro; died July 1852 in Madison, OH.
viii. ANN [7] RICHMOND, born March 16, 1806 in Washington, MA; married JOHN WALSH.

The Ann Wildern Martin Family site at Rootsweb was very helpful, especially the post-em note attached to Ann Richmond's entry.  The attached note stated that:

"Ann Richmond married John Welch... . They settled in Muskego, Waukesha, WI. Their experience is recounted in the 1880 History of Waukesha County at p. 910. Anne died in Muskego 6 Oct 1890 as recounted in Haight, Theron W. "Memoirs of Waukesha County, WI", pp 680-681 (Madison, 1907)."

From Theron Haight's "Memoirs of Waukesha County...":

From Henry Richmond Welch's biography, the family lived in Dexter (Washtenaw Co.), Michigan, when he was born.  John Welch, his father, died in 1872 and Ann (Richmond) Welch died on October 6, 1890.

The Welch family in the 1850 census:

United States Census, 1850
Muskego, Waukesha, Wisconsin, United States
Household Gender Age Birthplace
John Walsh M 55 Ireland
Ann Walsh F 44 Massachusetts
Stephen Walsh M 19 Michigan
Wm Welsh M 19 Michigan
Chas Welsh M 16 Michigan
Samantha Welsh F 14 Michigan
Mary Welsh F 9 Michigan
Henry Welsh M 9 Michigan
Thos Welsh M 6 Wisconsin
J J Welsh M 4 Wisconsin

The information in this post does not have the exact information that the e-mailer hoped for (she stated that she could not "find a birth record for my Ann, or a marriage record, or even a death record." ); however, Haight's "Memoirs" book did provided Ann's date of death.  I did not search for a birth or marriage record for Ann Richmond Welch.

The widowed Amy Richmond and her daughter Mary were living in Ann Arbor in 1900.

Members of this Richmond family are Mayflower descendants through Silvester Richmond (3), son of Edward and grandson of John the original immigrant.  This site indicated that they are also descendants of John Howland, a Mayflower passenger.

Portrait of Mrs. Amy Howland Richmond here in a Grand Rapids, Michigan, site.  Charles Richmond's (b. 1821) oldest brother, William Almy Richmond,  was a prominent Grand Rapids resident.

Ancestry of Amy White Howland  (Stephen11, Isaac10, Phillip9, Zoeth8, Henry7, Zoeth6, Henry5, Henry4, John3, John2, John1) was born May 28, 1836. She married CHARLES H. RICHMOND June 03, 1856.  There is a daguerreotype of Amy White Howland, class of 1854 -- was it this Amy?  I do not know.

The Well-Traveled Edminston Family

What caught my attention with Adelia Richmond's family was the fact that her daughter, Estella Edminston, was born in Michigan.

Adelia Richmond and John A. Edminston were married November 10, 1850. Adelia was enumerated with her mother and siblings in Washtenaw Co., Michigan, in 1850:

1850 MI Washtenaw, Scio
Richmond, Louisa, 43, NY
", Andrew, 21, NY
", Adelia, 18, MI
", Morris, 16, MI
", Eliza, 15, MI
", Harris, 13, MI
", Lemuel, 9, MI
", Mary, 6, MI

John may have lived as a boarder with several other unrelated individuals in Wayne County, Michigan, in 1850. The John Edminston living there in 1850 was a 21 year old carpenter who was born in Ohio.

The J.B. Richmond book entry indicated that the family was in New York for Samuel Edminston's birth in 1852; in Michigan for Estella's birth in 1854, and in Indiana for Eliza's birth in 1862. Daughter Cora wasn't in the J.B. Richmond book; she was born in Michigan in 1864.

By 1870 the Edminston/Edmiston family was in Bushnell, McDonough, Illinois:

WALKER, ARTHUR EDMISTON, ESTELLA MAY 1880-05-28 FULTON
EDMISTON, SAMUEL ANDERSON LANDAUER, CLARA JANETT 1883-10-31 FULTON

Adelia (Richmond) Edminston was living with her son, Samuel A. and his family in 1910 in Cook Co., Illinois. The census indicated that Adelia had 4 children; 2 of her children were still living in 1910. Samuel's children were born in Arkansas according to this census. A birth record online for Samuel's grandson (son of his daughter, Vera (Edmiston) Donaldson) listed Vera's birthplace as Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

This well-researched Rootsweb WorldConnect database for this Edminston family led me to Adelia (Richmond) Edmiston who was living with her daughter and son-in-law, Estella & Arthur Walker, in Cass Co., Iowa, when the 1900 census was taken. Adelia had 4 children with 3 children living in 1900. In 1910 Arthur Walker was a widower, so Estella was one of Adelia's children who had died prior to the 1910 census.

Adelia (Richmond) Edmiston's daughter, Eliza Belle, who married John F. Coykendall, was still living in 1910 in Illinois with her husband and daughters Edith (born ca 1890 in Nebraska) and Alice (born ca 1902 in Illinois). Son Charles Edmiston Coykendall was born 3 Aug 1884 in Cook Co., Illinois. Charles married Mable Rush and had a son b. 12 Feb 1911, who was named after his father.

Cora Edmiston, who married Clarence Keyes, must have been the child who died before the 1900 census was taken.

There is a death record extract, from Moberly, Randolph, MO, for Mr. J. A. Edmiston.
The above-mentioned Rootsweb site stated that an Adelia Edmiston died 19 April 1918, in Cook Co., Illinois.
