Marvin was the son of Newman and Samantha Jane (Richmond) Acker and the grandson of Elijah and Elizabeth (Fowler) Richmond.

Sarah Weatherwax was identified as a niece in James Richmond's will.... . Whose daughter was she? Was Weatherwax her maiden or married name? Was Sarah James' niece through his wife's side of the family?

Harriet Richmond was James Richmond's sister.  In transcribing James Richmond's will, I interpreted Harriet's married name as GARRETT, not GARVITT.  From the will:  Also a set of good, substantial grave stones for my deceased sister Mrs. Harriet Garrett, which also are to be placed at her grave.

Harriet Garrett is also how I transcribed her name in her father's will.

Now the information in the1850 census fell into place (Ira P. Richmond was James' brother, a fact known to me for some time).  Why didn't it click with me earlier?

Newman M. & Samantha Jane (Richmond) Acker

NEWMAN N. ACKER follows farming on section 27, Bloomfield Township. Here he owns and operates one hundred and ninety-seven acres of good land, and has made his home thereon for thirty-eight years. His farm is one of the best in the neighborhood, being under a high state of cultivation, and well improved with all modern accessories and conveniences. Neat and thrifty in appearance, it indicates to the passer-by the careful supervision of the owner, who is regarded as one of the leading agriculturists of the community.

Mr. Acker was born in Livingston County, N. Y., February 9, 1824. His grandfather, Albert Acker, was a native of England, and with a brother, John, crossed the briny deep to the New World, locating in New Jersey, whence he afterwards removed to New York. His brother located in Schoharie County of the Empire State. Albert Acker was a shoemaker by trade, and also followed the occupation of farming. During the Revolutionary War, he aided the Colonies in their struggle for independence, and later drew a pension in recognition of his services. His death occurred at about the age of eighty years. In his family of eight children was Silas Acker, the father of our subject, who was born in New Jersey, but during the greater part of his life carried on agricultural pursuits in Livingston County, N. Y., where his death occurred in 1868, at the age of seventy-eight. He served in the War of 1812. The mother of our subject bore the maiden name of Betsy McClelland. Her father, Joseph McClelland, was a native of Ireland, and became a farmer of Livingston County, N. Y.

The parents of our subject had a family of six children, three of whom are yet living: Sallie Ann, wife of Alanson E. Warner of Iola, Kan.; Newman M.; and Samuel. Mr. and Mrs. Acker were both members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. After the death of his first wife, the father married Betsy John, and to them were born two children, Elizabeth and Frances. For his third wife, Mr. Acker chose Miss Phoebe Kerns, and their union was blessed with two children, Frank and Rosina Sidona.

The gentleman whose name heads this record remained on a farm in Livingston County, N. Y., until fifteen years of age, and then went to Avon, where he learned the blacksmith's trade, which he followed for about four years. On the expiration of that period, he once more turned his attention to agricultural pursuits. As a companion and helpmate on life's journey, he chose Miss Samantha Jane Richmond, and on the 19th of March, 1846, their marriage was celebrated. The lady is a daughter of Elisha [sic] and Elizabeth (Fowler) Richmond, natives of New York.

In 1849, Mr. and Mrs. Acker emigrated westward, locating in Wisconsin, where our subject purchased a farm of eighty acres, to which he afterward added forty-two acres. In 1851 he removed his family to that place, and there resided for five years, when they moved to their present home. Besides this farm, Mr. Acker owns one hundred and four acres elsewhere, and has become one of the substantial citizens of the community. Seven children were born of the union of our subject and his wife, two sons and five daughters. Wilbur Hoag married Agnes Ketchpaw, by whom he has two children, Lucina Jane and George Newman, and now makes his home in Elkhorn. Marvin Whitfield wedded Elizabeth Jane Gifford, who died leaving four children: Luella, Georgie Ann, Maude and Lucy Mary. Loretta is the wife of Edwin Davis, of Bloomfield Township, by whom she has three sons: Newman, Claude and Marvin. Frances Jane is now deceased. Dollie Jane is the wife of Oscar Van Dyke, of Boone County, Ill., by whom she has a daughter, Alta May. Della Retta is the wife of Myron Lambert. They live on the old homestead, and have two children, Jennie Diantha and Pearl. Mary Elizabeth, the youngest of the family, is now deceased.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Acker are faithful and consistent members of the Methodist Church, in which he is now serving as Steward. The cause of temperance finds in him a warm friend, and he is much interested in the growth of temperance principles. In politics, he is a supporter of the Republican party. He has witnessed the greater part of the development of Walworth County, has seen its wild land transformed into beautiful homes and farms, and has watched the growth of the towns and cities. In the work of public improvement and advancement he has ever borne his part, and well deserves mention among the early settlers.

Huldah was 28 years old and living with her parents, Elijah & Elizabeth (Fowler) Richmond in Conesus, Livingston Co., New York, in 1850.

From the Will of Elijah Richmond:
I give to my daughter Holda Richmond the land and appurtenances situated thereon known and described as the Patterson Chapin Farm lying and being in the town of Bloomfield Walworth County and State of Wisconsin together with all the household furniture now possessed by me.

The farm known as the Patterson Chapin farm being the south half of the north west quarter twenty four acres off of the North part of the west half of the south west quarter of Section (22) twenty two of the town of Bloomfield containing (104) one hundred and four acres.

Huldah Sherman was living with her sister and brother-in-law (Samantha & Newman Acker) in Walworth Co., Wisconsin in 1860. Per that census, Huldah was married within the last year (1859). John Sherman who was married within the last year was enumerated here in 1860 (Deodat Brewster (see picture here) and family were in the same household as John Sherman). Don't know the significance, if any, of the Brewsters living with John Sherman and his wife, Huldah, not living with him in 1860.

John Sherman may have married 2nd Ella Frances Richards, born in June of 1839 in Ohio. John died in 1899.

John's widow Ella married Richard C. Williams in 1901.

The photo of the gravestone was one of many sent to me by Lynn, who is a Clary descendant (Lucy Clary married Ira Richmond and lived in Walworth Co., WI).

Dr. Weeks - Born in Wisconsin & Died in Detroit

Educated at Lawrence University. Degree of M. S. Occupied as teacher in Appleton, Merrill and Oshkosh.

Married: November 6, 1884, John M. Weeks, Lyons, Wisconsin.
Children: Edgar R., with the Hydrex Felt & Engineering Co., New York City; and Mary Elvira, science teacher.

Mary Elvira Weeks (1892 - 1975) earned a Phd in Chemistry and taught at the University of Kansas. She also wrote chemistry-related papers and books, including "Discovery of the Elements." In 1944 she accepted a position at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. She died in Detroit on 20 June 1975. As a Wayne State graduate, this was very interesting news to me! In addition, she and my sister (a Michigan native and paper company employee) both lived in Appleton, Wisconsin.


Descendants of Mary Elizabeth Richmond & John Millard Weeks are Mayflower descendants through Elvira Dimock Weeks (who married Spencer Weeks) and their son Lewis Spencer & Elvira (Little) Weeks.

It appears as though many of the Weeks family members are buried in Walworth County, Wisconsin (as are many of my own Richmond family members).

Warren & Roxalana (Powers) Richmond

Richmonds in this line are distantly related to me. John (1) is our mutual ancestor -- their line goes through John (2) and my line goes through John (2)'s brother, Edward. However, my direct ancestor, Elijah Richmond, moved to Walworth Co., Wisconsin, as did this Richmond family.



WARREN RICHMOND 7, (Amaziah 6, Amaziah 5, Ebenezer 4, Ebenezer 3, John 2, John 1) was born in Athens, Vermont, May 18, 1795. He married in Vermont, December 2, 1824, Roxalana Powers, who was born in 1803. He removed from Westminster, Vt., in 1844, to Amesbury, Mass., thence, May 7, 1853, to Whitewater, Walworth, Wis., where he died July 2, 1884.
The Powers family were natives of Athens, Vt., and moved to Wisconsin about 1840. Mrs. Richmond married, secondly, Mr. Cruver*.

Warren & Roxalana Richmond were in Salisbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts, in 1850. Warren's mother, Sarah, was living with them in 1850. Warren Richmond mentioned in his father's Revolutionary War file here. Warren Richmond apparently lost a court case over the Vermont property of his father, Amaziah in May of 1843 (details embedded here). The court case may explain the move to Massachussetts.

Joseph Reuben (J.R.) & Sarah (Kershaw) Richmond moved to Janesville, Rock Co., Wisconsin. Sarah was a widow in the 1910 WI Census and living with her son, David W. Richmond.

*Warren Richmond was a widower in the 1880 Census -- who married Mr. Cruver? According to the IGI, Roxalana Powers, daughter of Nathaniel & Esther (Johnson) Powers, died 27 April 1863. [Nathaniel was the son of Josiah & Mary (Robbins) Powers]

Roxalana (Powers) Richmond's brother, Dr. Americus Windsor Powers, and his wife, Mary (Rockwood) Powers, set forth on an odyssey that took them from Wisconsin to California. Dr. Powers sold his property to Warren & Roxalana (Powers) Richmond.

Mary Powers kept a diary of her trials and tribulations on that voyage. Their experience was chronicled in Heart of the Trail...by Mary Barmeyer O'Brien. "Mary Rockwood Powers watched her husband, Dr. Americus Powers, lead their tired horses through a hip-deep stream. Who was this man she had married?." Americus exhibited odd behavior that at times put his family at risk. The family found a home in San Leandro, California.

The widowed Americus Powers sold his San Benito Co., California, property to the Bear Valley School District for $1.00. Mary (Rockwood) Powers died in May of 1858. Americus died (was murdered) in September of 1886.

Don't Know Much About Ira Pratt Richmond

If Lorenza (or Losenza) Backus married a James Richmond (per Megow genealogical records by Nettie Adell Woodworth) it makes sense that Lorenza, sister of my Laura Backus married James, brother of Laura's husband Thomas Richmond. So that's the theory I'm going with unless and until I find one better.

James Richmond's will (probated aft. 15 December 1874) named Ira Pratt Richmond as his son. The Megow records stated that Jim and Losenza (Backus) Richmond had two sons, Ira Pratt Richmond, who supposedly died in the Civil War and Asberry Richmond who died at the age of 3 or 4. If my theory is correct and Thomas Richmond's brother James was married to Losenza then Ira Pratt Richmond was still living when James' will was made.

Was Ira hiding in plain sight in the 1850 NY census? Ira Richmond, age 13, was enumerated with Elijah & Elizabeth Richmond, who were James' parents. However Ira was listed next to Silas in the census and James was not with the family group, so the assumption on my part several years ago was that Silas was Ira's father. Now it seems more likely that Ira was James' son.

Where was James Richmond in 1850? As I mentioned in this post, there was a James Richmond in Auburn Prison (NY) in 1850. Was it this James?

In the 1860 WI Census taken in Walworth County, James A. Richmond was enumerated with his brother, Ira and Ira's wife Lucy.

The 1900 MI Census lists a Pratt Richmond, b. ca 1833, in New York, as a patient in the Northern Michigan Asylum in Grand Traverse Co., Michigan. He died on December 19, 1901. Was this person the son of James & Lorenza? The death record certificate does not record any parents' names. Perhaps more can be discovered at the Archives of Michigan.

3. I give & bequeath to Mrs. Huldah Sherman, one of my bedspreads & Mrs. Acker is to have the other one.

4. I give & bequeath to my brother, Ira P. Richmond, the black Bombagine Cloth, for a summer coat, it is in the bureau I have at his house.

5. I give & bequeath to my niece, Sarah Weatherwax, my large Bible.

6. I give & bequeath to Arretta Acker my niece, my photograph album.

The _____ of all my other effects, goods, notes, property, & credit, of whatever character, I give & bequeath to my son Pratt Richmond, in testimony of the love & good will I bear to him. In 1860, 49 year old James A. Richmond was living with his brother, Ira Richmond, in Walworth County, Wisconsin. Was James the James Richmond in prison in Auburn, Cayuga Co., New York, in 1850 (and probably incarcerated in 1850 per the dates listed next to the names in the census)? The crime was listed on the census [arson] but what was it (illegible). It appears as though the earliest case file for inmates at Auburn was 1894 with most from the 20th century. If James' son, Ira Pratt Richmond, was born ca 1853, could an incarcerated James be his father?

Were James Richmond and his brother Thomas (my ancestor) married to sisters? [Laura Backus married Thomas Richmond; was her sister, Lorenza married 1st to James Richmond and 2nd to William Watrous?]

Who was James Richmond's niece, Sarah Weatherwax? Was she related through his wife's family? Did he have more than one wife?

Several questions, not enough answers to the puzzles posed by James Richmond, late of Walworth County, Wisconsin.
