Ephraim Howland

Ephraim Howland 9 (John Richmond Howland 8, Hoziel Howland 7, Mary Howland 6, Seth Richmond 5, Joseph 4, Joseph 3, John 2, John 1)

Taken from Ancestry of Jennie Howland (adapted for her uncle Ephraim Howland):

Ephraim Howland’s immigrant ancestor was Arthur Howland, brother of the Mayflower passenger John Howland. Arthur Howland, Jr., son of the immigrant Arthur Howland, married Elizabeth Prence, daughter of Governor Thomas and Mary (Collier) Prence, to the dismay of the Governor. Before their marriage, Arthur Howland, Jr., appeared in court (with Governor Prence as the judge!) and was ordered to cease and desist his courtship of Elizabeth Prence against the wishes of her parents. It was a religious thing – the Howlands were Quakers. The Howlands were among those who were fined for “frequently absenting themselves from public worship of God.”

Governor Prence, who came to America in 1621 in the ship “Fortune,” was first married to Patience Brewster, daughter of Mayflower passenger William Brewster.

Genevieve Richmond Carradine

Thanks to fellow Richmond descendant, Michelle, who informed me that Genevieve Winifred (Richmond) Carradine, who was notable in her own right (said to be the first female brain surgeon in the United States, though I have yet to find corroborating evidence), was also famous through her Carradine son (John, born Richmond Reed Carradine) and grandchildren.

Genevieve Winifred Richmond was born in 1885 to Horace and Winifred (Ryan) Richmond, in Milford, Otsego County, New York.

The Family of Gilbert M. Richmond

Gilbert M. Richmond, son of Simeon & Elizabeth (Curtis) Richmond, married Helen Louisa, the daughter of Platt S. Beach. See the blog about Mr. Beach here.

In the 1850 WI census taken in Troy, Walworth County, Wisconsin, Gilbert, age 23, and Helen, age 21, were living next door to Gilbert's parents, Simeon (age 54, b. NY) and Elizabeth (49, b. A family tree with the Simeon Richmond family included can be found here.

The 1860 WI Census in Walworth Co. lists Gilbert, Helen and children Mary, Clara and Frank (for ages see the excerpt from the Richmond Family book above).

The census taken in 1870 for Walworth, WI, lists Gilbert, Helen, Frank and Nellie, age 5.
