After stumbling across Nancy (Pitt) Benton Barnard in a
deed in Livingston County, New York, at FamilySearch, I pursued my hunch that there was a possible Richmond family connection. My clue Samuel Pitt who was mentioned in the deed. The name of Pitt stuck with me because
Helen Pitt (Nancy's niece)
married the famous Frederick Douglass.

Pitt family went to Genesee County, New York, and were the first white family in Ontario County. They removed, about 1790, to what the Indians called Honega Flats, now the town of Richmond.
