Hawley Harvey Crippen...was an American homeopath, ear and eye specialist and medicine dispenser. He was hanged in Pentonville Prison for the murder of his wife Cora Henrietta Crippen, and was the first criminal to be captured with the aid of wireless telegraphy.

Mary and John were the parents of Ezra Crippen (1745-1813) who married Tabitha Crippen.

Ezra had a son, Bradley Crippen (1783-1855), who married Esther* Hard, daughter of Philo and Concurrence (Hawley) Hard.  They moved to Coldwater, Branch County, Michigan.  Son, Philo Crippen (1809-1890), also lived in Coldwater.

John Richmond, The Emigrant #1

John Richmond (1), the emigrant, was born in 1594; he came to America from Ashton Keynes, Wiltshire, England.  He probably left England about 1635, and was one of the purchasers  of Taunton in 1637.  Undoubtedly he was married before he came to this country, but neither the name of his wife, the date of their marriage, nor the date of her death, has been found.  He was away from Taunton much of his life,--through the record he is known to have been at Newport and other places,--but he returned to Taunton and died there March 20, 1664, aged seventy. [What was known in 1896 when the Richmond family book was written]

March 7, 1636. Mr. Thomas Lewis is by verdict of a jury to pay unto John Richmond six  £ (pounds)
ten shillings, for two barrells of beife.

March 14, 1636. John Richmond, an action against Mr. Tho. Lewis for detayning his servant against the law.

May 2, 1637.  Thomas Page, an action of trespass against John Richmond

June 1637.  John Richmond, an action for debt against Theoph. Davies.

What William Makepeace Thackeray Wrote

From The Richmond family, 1594-1896, and pre-American ancestors, 1040-1594 by Joshua Bailey Richmond:

William Makepeace Thackeray wrote of Colonel John Richmond-Webb (whose name may be found in the Gazetteer of the English Army): "He came of a very ancient Wiltshire family, which he respected above all families in the world; he could prove a lineal descent from King Edward I, and his first ancestor, Roaldus de Richmond, rode by William the Conqueror's side on Hastings Field.  'We were gentlemen,' Colonel Webb used to say, 'when the Churchills were horse-boys.'"

William Richmond Alias Webb In British History

This blurb from British History online, "In 1540 the site of the abbey's manor and lands called Turneys and Uffcott were granted to William Richmond alias Webb (d. 1579)," reminded me that my presumed Richmond ancestors were also Richmonds alias Webbs.

Before that quote was this information:

"A knight's fee in OVERWROUGHTON was granted early in the 12th century to Tewkesbury Abbey by Adelize, wife of Robert de Dunstanville, and probably heir of Humphrey Lisle. It was confirmed to the abbey by Walter de Dunstanville, probably him who died in 1195. Tewkesbury retained a manor in Overwroughton until the Dissolution."

Topping 9, born June 23, 1868; married* Herman G., son of Henry C. and Mary (Clapp) Briggs.  He was born at Howell, Mich., Dec. 6, 1862.  His father was born in England, and came to America when seventeen years old.  His mother was born in Boston, Mass., and was a descendant of Roger Clapp; her mother was a descendant of Sir Admiral Coffin.  Children: Morris H. Briggs 10**, born Sept, 15, 1888, in Detroit, Mich.; Lawrence G. Briggs 10, born July 18, 1890, in Howell, Mich.; Eleanor E. Briggs 10, born Aug. 29, 1892, in Howell, Mich.

**In 1930 Morris Briggs was living in Chicago with his wife, Leonie, who was born in France.  He was a rare book dealer.

Adeline Clapp is identified as a widowed aunt; Marjorie Montague was a niece and Alexander Montague a nephew of Herman Briggs, the head of household in the 1910 census.  In 1900 the Montague children were living with their widowed mother, Ella Montague, in Howell, Livingston Co., Michigan.  Luke Montague married Ella Briggs 15 December 1886.
