John & Susan (Richmond) Shafter


SUSAN G. RICHMOND (8) (Reuben F. 7, Amaziah 6, Amaziah 5, Ebenezer 4, Ebenezer 3, John 2, John 1) was born in Athens, Vt., January 17, 1829. She married, in 1850, John D. Shafter. They lived in California, where he owned one of the largest farms in the United States at the close of the Civil War.

Florence m. Charles Bothwell & live in San Jose, CA
Minnie d. 1862 in San Francisco

In 1850 John Shafter was in El Dorado, California. John was listed here on a passenger list on the ship Regulus, which left Boston in 1849 and was headed towards California as part of the Bunker Hill Trading and Mining Company.

The Shafter family was living in Point Reyes, Marin County, California, in 1860 (J.D., Susan, F.R. & Minnie).

John & Susan (Richmond) Shafter as well as Charles & Florence (Shafter) Bothwell and the Bothwell children, Bruce & Earl, were living together in San Jose, Santa Clara, CA, in 1900.
Florence (Shafter) Bothwell, who died 6 March 1956, was buried in Oak Hill.
Isabelle (McKee) Bothwell, Charles' mother, was the subject of an article about early pioneers.

Frank Shafter married on 26 April 1882, Frances Phipps and had Lottie Ruth and Bertha Ray. Frank died 1 Feb 1929, and is buried in Oak Hill Memorial Park in San Jose, California.

Was John a cousin of Oscar Lovell Shafter?

Do you have the Richmond book? Is that where you are pulling the Richmond info from? We just may be related after all if that is the case! I just haven't had time to work on this and I do not have the book.
